Friendship of Planets

Friendship and Enmity of Planets in Vedic Astrology

Planets represent energies. There are different kinds of energies in the system. Each planet in our solar system represents some energy. Some planets get along well with other planets. There is also friendship and animosity between planets based on their inherent characteristics. There is some method in determining the friendship and enmity between planets.

Natural friendship and Enmity

Sage Parasara has prescribed a rule to find out friendship, enmity, and neutral relationship with other planets.

  • First find out moola trikona sign of one planet
  • Count the sign owned by the other planet from the moola trikona of the first planet
  • On counting, if the sign happens to be 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, and 12th house or exaltation house, then the said planet is said to be a friendly planet
  • In other places, the planet will become enemy
  • As all planets except Sun and Moon are allocated two houses as own house, one house may become a friend and another house may become enemy. In such cases, the planet will become neutral
  • If both the houses become friendly signs, the said planet will become best friend.
  • Similarly if both the houses become enemy signs, then said planet will become bitter enemy.

Example:

Let us determine the relationship of the Sun with Mars

  • Moola trikona sign of Sun in Leo (Simha)
  • Mars owns two houses, Aries and Scorpio. Aries is 9th house from Moola trikona of Leo
  • Scorpio is 4th house from Leo.
  • As mentioned in the rule, 4th and 9th house will become friendship houses. So Mars will become friend in two counts.
  • Hence Mars is best friend to Sun

Example2

Let us determine the relationship of the Sun with Saturn

  • Moola trikona sign of Sun in Leo (Simha)
  • Saturn owns two houses, Capricorn and Aquarius. Capricorn is 6th house from Moola trikona of Leo
  • Aquarius is 7th house from Leo.
  • As per the rule, 6th and 7th house lords will become enemies from both the counts.
  • Hence Saturn will become bitter enemy of Sun

By using the above method, we can calculate the relationship for all the planets. Refer table below for reference and also Moola trikona signs for each planet.

Temporary Relationships

Depending on the placement of one planet from another planet in an individual chart, temporary relationships occur. When a planet is placed in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th houses from itself, that planet will become a temporary friend. If the planet is placed in other houses than the above, that planet will become a temporary enemy.

Compound Relationship or Panchada Maithri

When you combine both natural and temporary relationships in a particular chart, we will get a compound relationship. Hence it will be: Friend + Friend = Great Friend Friend + Neutral = Friend Friend + Enemy = Neutral Enemy + Neutral = Enemy Enemy + Enemy = Bitter Enemy
