Kala Sarpa Yoga in Vedic Astrology

There are many controversies surrounding the kalasarpa yoga. This yoga is not mentioned in the classical books of Astrology. But much research has been done on this aspect and we cannot ignore this yoga. Kalasarpa yoga does not individually decide everything in the horoscope but will play some role in the chart. Overall assessment of the chart is required before concluding anything.

How Kala Sarpa Yoga is formed?

Rahu and Ketu signify a snake and always move 180° apart. Rahu is considered as a head and Ketu as its tail. Kalasarpa yoga is formed when all the planets are situated between Rahu and Ketu in a chart. Here all the planets are moving towards Ketu. We know that Rahu and Ketu always move in retrograde motion as opposed to other physical planets. In kalasarpa yoga, It looks as if Rahu has swallowed all the planets and these planets are sitting in the belly of the snake.

Another variation is Kala Amrita Yoga. In this case, the situation will be opposite to Kalasarpa yoga. Here all the planets are in between the Ketu and Rahu axis. BV Raman states that both types will have their own effects. Planets in the Rahu-Ketu axis favor the rise in mundane life and planets in the Ketu-Rahu axis promote spiritual elevation.

Effect of Kala Sarpa Yoga

It is believed that Rahu represents unfulfilled desires of one's past. We all take birth in this world to fulfill our past desires and also the Karma. The snake also represents desires. In a spiritual sense, those who are bitten by desires of senses, suffer from the cycle of births. Here when all the planetary energies are bitten by the Rahu-Ketu axis, there may be suffering from respect to the desires. The native has to go behind materialistic pursuits.

Kala means time. Here in Kalasarpa yoga, the serpent will eat all the planetary energies. That means the native will be completely engrossed in material activity. If we speak in a spiritual language, the main motivation of the soul is to get liberation. When kalasarpa yoga exists, he will deviate from his original path, and all the energies are used in material activity. The serpent will eat spiritual energy.
