About Aditya Hrudayam in English

Aditya Hrudaya Stotram is a powerful, sacred hymn dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun God). Sage Agastya composed this mantra and gave it to Sri Rama, on the battlefield of the Lanka war. The word 'Aditya' means 'the son of Aditi', which is another name for Surya, and ‘Hrudaya’ means heart, soul, or divine knowledge. This hymn gives us divine knowledge about Sun God.

Aditya Hrudayam mantra is mentioned in the Yuddha Kanda, the sixth chapter of the epic Ramayana. It contains 31 shlokas (verses) and it is recited to invoke the blessings of the Lord Sun for success, health, and prosperity. The theme of the Aditya Stotra includes the glory and power of Lord Surya, his abilities as a creator, protector, and destroyer of the universe, and how a devotee can use the power of the Sun to vanquish the enemies and get protection.

Aditya Hridayam hymn was given to Rama by Sage Agastya to win the war against the demon Ravana. Even though, the hymn was originally recited to win an external battle, it will be useful for many purposes. We all face problems internally and externally and solving life problems is no less than a battle. Therefore, Aditya Hrudayam gives strength and determination to face any challenges in life.

Reciting Aditya Hrudayam in front of the Sun is more beneficial. You can recite this in the mornings and in the evening times. Offer water three times and recite this hymn with utmost devotion.     Salutations to Savitr, the aspect of the Sun God. You are the cause of the creation, preservation, and destruction of the universe. You are the embodiment of the three qualities (Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas). You are the only Brahma, Vishnu and Shankara.

  • tato yuddhaparishraantam samare chintayaasthitam |
    raavanam chaagrato drushtvaa yuddhaaya samupasthitam || 1 ||

    Having exhausted, Sri Rama was in deep thought in the midst of the battle. And was Ravana standing before him fully prepared for the war.

  • daivataishcha samaagamya drashtumabhyaagato ranam |
    upaagamyaa bravIdraamam agastyo bhagamaan rushi: || 2 ||

    Sage Agastya, who had come there to see the battle with other deities, came to Rama, who was overwhelmed with worry and said thus

    Salutations to the Sun God, who is filled with rays that nourish all equally, is worshipped by both gods and demons alike, and is the lord of this universe.

    The pitrs (ancestors), the eight Vasus (the attendant deities), Sadhyas (the sons of Dharma), Ashwins (the physicians of gods), Maruts (wind gods), Manu (the first man), Vayu (the God of wind), Agni (the God of fire), Prana (the breath), Ruthukarta (the maker of seasons) and Prabhakara (giver of light) are the different manifestations of Lord Surya.

  • aadityah savitaa suryah khagah pushaa gabhastimaan |
    suvarnasadrusho bhaanuh hiranyaretaa divaakarah || 10 ||

    His other names are Aditya (son of Aditi), Savita (the source of all beings), Surya (the Sun God), Khaga (mover in space), Pusha (the god of nourishment), Gabhastiman (the one with rays). He radiates golden rays from his core and creates a bright day for all.

  • haridashvah sahasraarchih saptasaptirmarichimaan |
    timironmathanah shambhuh tvashtaa maartandakomshumaan || 11 ||

    Thousands of golden coloured rays come out of him like horses. The rays contain seven horses (seven types of colours) which produce light. These rays penetrate everywhere which dispels darkness, gives joy, and reinfuses life (Martanda).

  • hiranyagarbhah shishirah tapano bhaaskaro ravih |
    agnigarbhoditrh putrah shankhah shishiranaashanah || 12 ||

    His golden womb burns and provides light in the sky. The fire in the womb of the son of Aditi (surya) dispels uncertainty and inertia.

  • vyomanaatha stamobhedi rugyaju:saamapaaragah |
    ghanaavrushtirapaam mitro vindhyavIthI plavangamah || 13 ||

    Being the lord of the sky, he helps to eliminate ignorance in us by imparting knowledge (being proficient in Vedas like Rig, Yajur, Sama Vedas). He, as the lord of knowledge (mitra), moves across the sky and showers wisdom like heavy rain.

  • aatapi mandali mrutyuh pingala sarvataapanah |
    kavirvishvo mahaatejaa raktah sarvabhavodbhavah || 14 ||

    The energy which flows through the solar energy channel (Pingala Nadi) causes the cycle of life and death. He looks like a poet who creates and controls this wonderful world with his brilliance and fiery energy.

  • nakshatragraha taaraanaam adhipo vishvabhaavanah |
    tejasaamapi tejasvI dvaadashaatmannamostute || 15 ||

    He is the lord of the constellations, planets, and stars and the creator of this universe. Salutations to him, who is very energetic and appears in twelve forms.

  • namah purvaaya giraye pashchimaayaadraye namah |
    jyotirganaanaam pataye dInaadhipataye namah || 16 ||

    Salutations to him who rises in the east and sets in the west direction. Salutations to the lord of the group of stars and to the lord of the day.

  • jayaaya jayabhadraaya haryashvaaya namo namah |
    namo namah sahasraamsho aadityaaya namo namah || 17 ||

    Salutations to the one who gives victory, and the one who also gives good fortune along with victory. Salutations to the son of Aditi, who spreads himself in thousands of parts as rays.

  • namah ugraaya viraaya saarangaaya namo namah |
    namah padmaprabodhaaya maartaandaaya namo namah || 18 |

    Salutations to the one who is mighty, courageous, and who travels fast. Salutations to the one who makes the lotus blossom (or awakens chakras in the body) and the one who revitalizes life

    bhaasvate sarvabhakshaaya roudraaya vapushe namah || 19 ||

    Salutations to the one who himself is Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Salutations to the one who illuminates the world with his power and splendor and at the same time, like Rudra, who is very fierce and destroys everything.

  • tamoghnaaya himaghnaaya shatrughnaayaa mitaatmane |
    krutaghnaghnaaya devaaya jyotishaam pataye namah || 20 ||

    Salutations to the one who is the destroyer of ignorance, demolisher of snow, destroyer of enemies, and the one with controlled senses. Salutations to the one who is the punisher of the ungrateful, who is divine, and lord of planets.

  • tapta chaameekaraabhaaya vahnaye vishvakarmane |
    namastamobhi nighnaaya ruchaye lokasaakshine || 21 ||

    Salutations to the one who shines like molten gold, and whose energy creates all the activities of the world. Salutations to the one who removes ignorance and sins, who is radiant, and one who witnesses everything in the world.

  • naashayatyesha vai bhutam tadeva srujati prabhuh |
    paayatyesha tapatyesha varshatyesha gabhastibhih || 22 ||

    He is the only god who destroys everything in the end, and creates it again. He consumes the water with his rays, heats them up, and brings them back as rain.

  • esha supteshu jaagarti bhuteshu parinishthitah |
    esha evaagnihotram cha phalam chaivaagni hotrinaam || 23 ||

    He is the one who lives in all beings, whether they are asleep or awake. He is the agnihotra (sacrificial fire) himself, and he is also the fruit obtained after the completion of the agnihotra.

  • vedaashcha kratavashchaiva kratunaam phalameva cha |
    yaani krutyaani lokeshu sarva esha ravih prabhuh || 24 ||

    He is the lord of all the actions in this universe, including Vedic rituals and their fruits. He is the lord of all the actions performed in the world and he is the supreme lord, Ravi.

  • enamaapatsu kruchreshu kaantaareshu bhayeshu cha |
    kirtayan purushah kashchinnaavashI dati raaghava || 25 ||

    Oh, Rama! Reciting Aditya hrudayam during hardships, or while lost in the wilderness, or during times of fear will always be protected.

  • pujayasvaina mekaagro devadevam jagatpatim |
    etat trigunitam japtvaa yuddheshu vijayishyasi || 26 ||

    If you worship the lord of the lords and the lord of the universe with utmost concentration and admiration, and recite this hymn thrice in praise of the lord, you will be victorious in any battle.

  • asmin kshane mahaabaaho raavanam tvam vadhishyasi |
    evamuktvaa tadaagastyo jagaama cha yathaagatam || 27 ||

    At this moment, O mighty-armed Rama, you will kill Ravana. Having said this Agastya then departed as he had come.

  • etachchrutvaa mahaatejaah nashtashokobhavattadaa |
    dhaarayaamaasa suprito raaghavah prayataatmavaan || 28 ||

    On hearing this, the splendorous Rama became free from all grief. With a composed mind, Rama took in the advice with great pleasure.

  • aadityam prekshya japtvaatu param harshamavaaptavaan |
    triraachamya shuchirbhutvaa dhanuraadaaya viryavaan || 29 ||

    After getting purified by performing Achamanam (sipping water thrice), Rama looked up at the Sun and recited Aditya Hridayam with great devotion. He experienced supreme joy. After all the rituals were completed, he took up his bow.

  • raavanam prekshya hrushtaatmaa yuddhaaya samupaagamat |
    sarvayatnena mahataa vadhe tasya dhrutobhavat || 30 ||

    Upon seeing Ravana, Rama, was overjoyed, and prepared himself for the battle. With great effort, he took the resolve to kill the enemy.

  • atha raviravadannirIkshya raamam muditamanaah paramam prahrushyamaanah |
    nishicharapatisamkshayam viditvaa suragana madhyagato vachastvareti || 31 ||

    Thus the Sun God became extremely delighted and looked at Rama with great pleasure. Knowing the destruction of the king of demons was near, the Sun God watched the battle along with other gods.
